[/size][Distant;;
Ryat has trust issues. Simple as that. He trusts an ever decreasing number of people and doesn't try to open up to new people. He keeps everyone at arms length, some even further away. Many people may think that they are his 'friend,' but he doesn't see it that way. All those people are simply 'acquaintances.' After all, that's all he really desires. To Ryat, close relationships are unnecessary and troublesome.
[Playful;;
That's not to say that he's not social, quite the opposite. He's always making a remark about something and his remark is always truthful. He likes to keep people guessing about him and so says many vague and strange things to keep people on their toes. This can lead to confusion about when he's being serious and when he's spouting nonsense. However, this has attracted some people, and matched with his love of partying, Ryat can form quite a circle of acquaintances.
[Thoughtful;;
Now for his thinking. Ryat tends to take simple concepts and think them over so many times that they get morphed and become difficult to comprehend. He questions everything, especially the government and society. He's always trying to figure out why people will blindly follow others and why they are always doing things the don't want to. He likes to figure out people's motives and their wishes, just to know them. He does care about people through his distance, he just tends to care for groups of people more than caring on an individual basis. Some may find this as the trait of a good person, some may think this makes him a bad person. Either way, he is who he is.
[Serious;;
Though he likes to keep people guessing and he likes to mess around, Ryat is very serious at times. Once he has set his sights on doing something, nothing and no one is going to get in his way. The same thing about serious situations – he avoids them as much as possible, but when he can't get out of them, he will be the most focused one around. Ryat is very aware when to be serious and when to mess around. Sometimes people just can't tell if he does or not.
[Defiant;;
The most troublesome part of his personality. Ryat is going to do whatever he wants to do, whenever he wants to do it. Though he doesn't defy people without a reason. He only goes against what goes against his nature. So when some rule says to do something every hour on the hour, he's not going to do it. Hes constantly getting in trouble for that. His gang seems to be eternally frustrated with his fighting. It's not that he can't fight, quite the opposite, he just never does what they expect him to. If he's told to participate in a specific fight, he either avoids it like the plague or goes for two minutes and leaves. If he's been told to stay away from something, he clings to it or ignores it. He always changes how he reacts to orders and no one can predict his next move.

Right from the womb, Ryat was made to be different. It started with his name. Missy and Ryley decided on 'Ryat' because he had been -ahem- conceived at a protest that had ended in a riot. However, 'Riot' would be too obvious, so they messed with the spelling. And thus began Ryat's life.
Ryat completely adored his father.
Ryley, the father, was a scientist, borderline philosopher. His studies normally involved sociology, psychology, and the general human psyche. He was an active protester in New York and was an active member of many different groups. Ryat's idol. Everyone's favorite child spent most of his toddler years shadowing his dad in all his escapades.
But what about Ryat's mother?
She was generally accepting of her husband's and son's ventures, but never wished to join them. She was normally the one to drive them to rallies and protests since Ryley refused to own a car. Missy herself was a more material person. She gambled and shopped and drank way too much for their single income. Being a former model, she had some money left over, but it wouldn't last forever.
The couple had many differences in goals, dreams, and desires, but they were happy enough.
Divorce was never a way for Ryley and Missy, especially once Ryat was born. They would do anything for the bumbling toddler. At first, when Ryley was bringing Ryat to protests, Missy freaked out. That night ended with a few broken dishes. However, Ryley managed to convince her how happy Ryat was at the events and she could do no more.
So Ryat grew up in heaven.
What he didn't know was that his mother's gambling and alcohol addiction was getting progressively worse. Ryley wasn't even aware of the severity. They were only clued in around Ryat's eleventh birthday, when Missy started staying out all night and not coming back until noon the next day. She and Ryley had many arguments, but the partying wouldn't stop. And they still refused to divorce.
Things finally changed when Ryat was thirteen.
His father won an award for a breakthrough in his research. Instead of bothering himself with his out of control wife, he had spent more of his time researching or out protesting with Ryat. Missy hadn't changed at all for the better. The night of the awards ceremony, they all three got dressed up and went to the fancy, overpriced party.
It was boring.
Ryley gave a speech over his research and thanked everyone, then just spoke to a whole bunch of fat guys in expensive suits. Ryat ended up sitting at their special table most of the night, wondering if the infinitesimal portion of food that had been placed in front of him should be ingested by a human. Deciding that the answer was no, he went to eat at the snack table.
He watched as the liquor was brought out and set in front of his mother.
His father was blissfully unaware while his wife was already busy drowning herself. Ryat didn't stop her or intervene in any way, just watched in disgust as the woman that used to be his mother downed more of the bitter substances. Ryat stayed at the snack table until the party ended and his father returned to his wife. Ryley had been nursing a few drinks over the night, and didn't feel comfortable driving.
He handed the keys to his wife.
Ryat tried to protest, but his father refused to drive. They all got in the car. Missy's driving was almost normal. If Ryat hadn't watched her drink so much, he wouldn't have known she was drunk out of her mind. Unfortunately, going around a corner, she lost control of the car. It slammed into the side of a supermarket. No pedestrians were harmed, but the entire passenger side of the vehicle was totaled. Riley's side.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ryat was barely thirteen, he was completely lost. His father had been his escape away from his mother. Now he was stuck with her alone. Missy wasn't holding up well herself. At first, she blamed herself and attempted to become a good mother. She tried to stop the gambling and liquor and hold down a job. She lasted three days before having a mental breakdown. She no longer accepted that her husband died because of her addiction.
Lying became her escape.
She lied to herself – said she didn't have any problems, said her son loved her, said she had enough money to keep the house. From there it only got worse and worse until she started telling herself Ryley hadn't died. That he was still alive. She tried to tell Ryat and he couldn't handle it. Missy was mentally insane and he refused to stay with her any longer.
The only thing he could do was leave.
He met up with some of his dad's friends he met at rallies and a man named Jeff agreed to let him stay with him for a while. They hit it off pretty well and with Jeff's help, Ryat became an active protester once again. Ryat stayed with Jeff until he was seventeen. Jeff had to move because of his job. He asked Ryat to go with him, but he declined. When Jeff left, Ryat hooked up with a different person almost every night while he was saving up money for a place of his own. He even dabbled in prostitution to earn more money.
He managed to rent a cheap apartment.
But he kept up with the prostitution until he could afford a decent place. When he moved again, he was almost eighteen. He stopped selling his body and got a better job. In his spare time, he joined up with a large group of activists. They planned to storm the busiest street in New York. They carried it out on Ryat's eighteenth birthday. The protest was complete with signs, megaphones, the works.
Just enough to get the police's attention.
Ryat was one of the first caught. He tried to break free and ended up breaking one officer's leg and another's nose. They charged him with everything they could. Aggravated assault on a police officer, treason, speaking against the state, 'terrorist actions,' the list probably could've continued, especially if he was caught for prostitution or Missy had filed him as missing. Ryat figured she still thought he was with her, like she thought Ryley was. Either way, he was convicted until the institute deemed him fit for society once again.
